McCUTCHEN

Douglas Ray McCutchen, devoted husband, father and friend, passed away 
Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, in San Angelo. He was currently serving as 
executive director of athletics for the San Angelo Independent School 
District. 

Doug was born in Bronte, Texas, on Oct. 11, 1949, to Calvin and Irma 
Lee McCutchen. He attended Texas Tech University where he earned his 
bachelor's degree in physical education and earned his master's degree 
in special education at Angelo State University. While at Tech, Doug 
played football leading the Southwest Conference in rushing in 1970, 
and was named to the All SWC Offensive Team in 1970. He was the first 
back in Tech history to rush for 1,000 yards. 

Doug began his coaching career in San Angelo at Central High School. 
After three years and a national championship at Texas A&I, Kingsville, 
he started his head coaching career at Liberty High School followed by 
head positions in Houston, Midland, Duncanville and Amarillo. During 
this time he was twice named 5A Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1997, 
Coach of the Year All West South Plains in 1997, and was appointed to 
THSCA North All Star Selection Committee in 1988. 

After 27 years in coaching, Doug became director of athletics for the 
Spring Independent School District. While in this position, he earned 
the John Kelly Distinguished Service Award and was selected as award's 
chairman and Region IV chairman for the Athletic Directors Association. 
While in this position, there were six state finalists in football, 
girls' basketball and baseball, one state championship in girls' 
basketball and five individual state championships in cross country, 
swimming and track. Doug felt great pleasure in seeing young people and 
their coaching staffs succeed and he  was truly passionate in providing 
the best facilities and equipment to help in these successes. 

Doug is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathy; his two proudest 
achievements, son Chad McCutchen of Dallas and Shae McCutchen of Spring; 
sister Patricia and brother-in-law Martin of Bronte; sister Yvonne Black 
of Lubbock; brother Ken McCutchen and wife Minerva of Mullin; 
sisters-in-law Marty Borden of Cleburne and Charlotte Sollers of Forney; 
aunt Georgia Rhue Gibbs of Winters; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

The family would like to thank Superintendent Dr. Carol Ann Bonds, 
Assistant Superintendent Shelly Houlihan, administrators of SAISD and 
SAISD board member Max Parker for their unrelenting support during 
Doug's illness, the doctors, administrators and ICU nursing staff at 
Community Hospital for their constant and gentle care, Hospice of 
San Angelo, all of the visitors and well-wishers and the wonderful 
friends who helped the family in so many ways. A special thank you to 
the Taco Tuesdays group who made sure Doug never spent a moment alone 
so the family could rest. We cannot mention them all for fear of omission. 

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at First Baptist 
Church, San Angelo, Dr. Mark Bumpus officiating. Funeral service will be 
held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at First United Methodist Church, 
Bronte, Mills Carraway officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
 
Following the service, a private family burial will be held in Hayrick, 
the Rev. Brian Barlow, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Pallbearers will 
be Robert Young of Houston, Davis Corley of Midland and Don Hageman, 
Larry Garvin, Mike Martin and Mark Baker of San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, 
memorials may be made to Meals for the Elderly, San Angelo; Hospice of 
San Angelo; or the charity of choice. Family and friends may sign the
