Obituary: DJ Walker, Jr., October 16, 2012 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines Feb 2015 *********************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise, Coke County, TX - November 9, 2012 DJ Walker, Jr., of Robert Lee died on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 5:30 pm. Funeral services were held at 3 pm Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Robert Lee Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Danny White. Interment followed at Robert Lee Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. DJ was born on May 13, 1929, near Silver, Texas, to Dee J and Ada Millican Walker. DJ attended school in Robert Lee, graduating in 1946. DJ married Cornelia "Nelia" Boykin October 23, 1949. They spent most of their married life in the home they built in 1950. DJ worked in the oilfield as a roustabout, roughneck and driller. In 1959, DJ began working for Union Texas Petroleum. Twenty eight years later he retired on December 11, 1987. Farming and ranching had always been in the heart of DJ. One of his favorite things was telling stories about his "help", the grandchildren. Some of the grandchildren give much credit to "Daddy Dee" for all the wonderful work ethic and importance of knowing how to do a day's work for a day's pay. DJ was a member of the Robert Lee Baptist Church. He served on the Robert Lee School Board for 10 years, as Director of the Coke County Livestock Show for 20 years, as well as the Coke County Equalization Board. He is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Edna Russell, Edith Conger, and Agnes Hardin; one brother Ralph Walker and one great-grandson Charles Wade Helwig. DJ is survived by his wife Nelia Walker of Robert Lee, four daughters: Sharon Pitcock and husband Darrel of Robert Lee, Becky Purvis and husband Dennis of Sonora, Audrey Devoll and husband Donnie of Robert Lee, and Cindy Riley and husband Mark of San Angelo and Midland. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren: Jenny and Charles Kneuper, children, Cade and Cash of Hamilton, Texas; Laura and Ladd Hughes, children Trey and Halli of Christoval, Texas; Kari and Clay Hale, child Hayden of Ozona, Texas; Chad and Heather Helwig, children Caleb and Christian, and Heidi of Florida; Jodee and Chad Melton, child Lillee of Independence, Missouri; Cooper and Whitney Riley of Mertzon, Texas; Julie and Clint Halfmann of Wall, Texas; Audra and Randy Gaines, children Jessica, Katie and Emily of Dripping Springs, Texas; Judd and Cathy Pitcock, children Alexis, Lauryn and Eryn of San Angelo, Texas; Jerrod and Amber Pitcock, children Brody, Kylen and Jewel of Robert Lee; Matthew and Jessie Pitcock, children Landry, Hannah and Walker of Mustang, Oklahoma; Travis and Lindsey Pitcock, children Braydon and Granger of Greenwood, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members he enjoyed seeing at the family reunions. *************************** Permission granted by The Observer/Enterprise for publication in the Coke County TXGenWeb and/or the Coke County Archives of the USGenWeb.
