FORBES, deceased, was for a number of years a worthy member of the medical profession of Falls county, and was well known throughout this section of Texas. His father, Dr. Robert Forbes, who was born in Tennessee in 1806, came to Texas in 1853, and first located in Falls county, where he lived and practiced his profession until his death, which occurred April 24, 1871. He was a successful man, both professionally and financially. He affiliated with the Democratic party and was a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was married in 1832, to Elzira Long, a native of Tennessee, and a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Long, natives of Kentucky. Two children were born to them, the subject of this sketch and his sister Nancy, the latter being deceased. She was the wife of William Peck, a merchant of Freestone county, Texas. Lycurgus D. was born in Tennessee in 1835, and was eighteen years of age at the time he moved with his parents to Texas. He remained with them until 1867. He was educated in Tennessee, and began the study of medicine under Dr. Dudley; was a graduate of the Louisville Medical College and of the. New Orleans School of Medicine, completing his course at the latter institution in 1860. He then located for practice in Freestone county, Texas; from there moved to Limestone county, and thence to Falls county, where he continued to practice, meeting with eminent success, till 1876, when he retired. He was, however, urged by his many friends to resume practice, which he did till the time of his death. Dr. Forbes was married in 1869, to Mrs. Hollingsworth, nee Sallie Scogin, daughter of Toliver and Caroline (Davenport) Scogin, natives of South Carolina and Alabama respectively. By her first husband, Richard C. Hollingsworth, she had one child, Richie, wife of Samuel Feyton, of Regan, Texas. By Dr. Forbes she had six children, viz.: Lizzie, a music teacher; Carrie, a student at Sherman, Texas; and Robert, Nannie, Walton and Edwin, at home. The Doctor was a man of general information, charitable nature, good habits and even temper, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was in politics a Democrat. He enlisted in the Confederate service in 1861, and was all through the war. From time to time he invested in real estate, and at his death his land-holdings comprised about 1,000 acres, 315 of which were under cultivation; was also interested in stock. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Forbes also is a member of the Baptist Church.
