Pearson died at his home near the city Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Mr. Pearson was a prominent Confederate veteran. He was serving as a cadet in the United States Navy when the Civil War began, and resigned to enter the Confederate Navy, serving throughout the war. He was in Admiral Semmes' naval brigade when the war closed. He was in the naval school with Schley and Sampson, was a classmate of "Fighting Bob" Evans. Mr. Pearson left a widow and six children, three sons and three daughters. He had one son, Drue Pearson, in the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and it was Mr. Pearson's dying wish that his son continue in the service. J. M. Pearson was born in Tennessee sixty-six years ago. He had lived here thirty-five years and was highly honored as a citizen, businessman, Christian and Mason. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Revs. Bryan and Bassett held the religious services and the Masonic lodge to which he belonged buried him at the City Cemetery Thursday afternoon.
