All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/jones/jonestoc.htm *********************************************************** The Stamford AmericanFriday, April 18, 1930Vol. 7, Number 1Rockdale has Good Schools and ChurchesIs Primarily stock country but has had some excellent farmsby Mrs. John IvyRockdale community is located in the southeast corner of Haskell county betweenCalifornia Creek and the Clear Fork River, which places it about 18 miles east ofStamford.Rockdale was founded about 1904. A few families lived here prior to that date butthere was no school here until then.In 1904 a school house was built, just a little one-room house, very small, but quitelarge enough at that time. But the community outgrew this, and built a larger houseand in the year 1923 an addition was built making a two-room house. The building forthe school now has a nice modern building consisting of two large rooms, withnecessary cloak rooms and a stage of 24 by 12 feet in the side of the building. Thestage is equipped with modern curtains, for which the people are thankful to thebusiness men of Stamford.Rockdale has two good church building, the Rockdale Baptist church and the LindseyChurch of Christ. The latter was established in the residence of D.L. Lindsey in 1905and later used the school house for a place of worship until the church house wasbuilt in 1921.Rockdale is primarily a stock country, several ranches or in or near here. Howeverthere are many good farms located in Rockdale district.Rockdale has a chance to be an oil field some four or five producing oil wells andone gas well in this district are present.The old western hospitality and good will are present in this community. Everyone isa friend to everyone else and there is no enmity or ill feelings to cause strifeamong the people.Rockdale has a country club which meets once a month, with a good attendance. Thesemeetings help many problems and are discussed, and plans made to better conditionswhich now exist.
