Nieves was the only Serenil survivor of the early 1820 Comanche Indian raids on settlers in Texas. His story was passed down to the Serenil elders which tell that after his family was killed, he was taken captive and, lived with the native Indians for several years until his escape. Nieves lived in the Bexar, Medina and Losoya Texas area with his son Jose De Jesus until the late 1890s before moving to Karnes County. Additional Comments: This photo was taken at the Gillette Cemetery. The grave is located behind the Gillette Cemetery which is already listed by Lisa Dromgoole Adams. It contains several graves and includes several of the early ancestral Serenil Family. The sad part is that part of the cemetery property was reclaimed and fenced off several years ago and only about 30 or so graves remain there. My hope is that the remaining property will not be reclaimed and my ancestors will not be lost. The entrance to the Gillette Latin Cemetery is on the road on the immediate right, along the fence, next to the well-known Gillette Cemetery. This back area contains, I believe, the graves of the Hispanic population of Gillette Texas File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/tx/karnes/photos/tombstones/gillettelatin/serenil10885nph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/txfiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
