Funeral Program

Final Christian Rites for Brother Joe James Smoots were conducted Thursday June 
16, 1983 at 2:00 PM from Saint Matthew Baptist Church, 1101 Waco, with Rev. 
Elliott Grant officiating.  Brother Joe J. Smoots was born in Washington County 
to the family of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Smoots.  He was the oldest son & 2nd child born 
to this union.  He attended school in Washington County & served in World War 
I.   He & Mrs. Blanche Harris were married & moved to Corpus Christi in 1931 & 
united with Saint Matthew Baptist Church.  He served his church in many areas & 
well to include serving on the Usher Board.  He was a member of the Masonic 
Lodge AF & AM, Jubilee Chapter #230.  He departed this life Sunday at his 
home.  Leaving to mourn his passing are his wife, Blanche; 3 sons, Joe L. 
Smoots of Newark, New Jersey; Clifford Vernell & Charles E. Smoots, both of 
Corpus Christi; 1 sister, Mrs. Beatrice Bradley of Dekalb, Texas; 3 brothers, 
Andrew Smoots of Corpus Christi; Elough Smoots & Fred Smoots, both of Houston, 
Texas; 8 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren; & many friends & relatives.  
Pallbearers included member of Jubilee Lodge #280 (230) AF & AM Masonic.  
Arrangements were made by Jackson Flowers Funeral Home.  Interment is at Rose 
Hill Memorial Park.  Masons were in charge.
