Louis Conor Alexander,to Mertzon in 1940 and worked on the Martin Reed Ranch for 16 years, the birth place of their only son.
In July 1956, John and his family returned to Sterling city. John worked for the J.C. Reed Ranch as ranch foreman from 1958-1968. From 1968 - 1978, John worked as a welder with Elton Hull. The latter part of his life was spent hauling materials from San Angelo to Sterling city, helping his son in the construction business.
John was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. Two of his sisters died as infants.
John is survived by his wife, Etherl Blair of Sterling City; a son, Billy Joe Blair of Sterling city; and several nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorials by made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Sterling City with Him Petty officiating. Burial will follow in Montvale Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Frank Stewart, Kyle Stewart, Poke Brown, Drew Durham, Luther Smith and Lewis Watson.

Juan Cantu Arizola, 66, died Saturday, November 29, 1997. Service was at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 1997 at the First Baptist church, with burial in the Sterling City Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ross Funeral Home. He was born in Fredericksburg and was a longtime resident of Sterling City. Survivors include his brothers, Genabeba Bernal, Patrososnia Cantu, Thomas Arizola Jr., Roberto Arizola and Gregoria Arizola, A sister, Domina Bradshaw, and his children Maria, Rickie, Susie, Martha, Connie, Martin, and George.

Sterling City Bobby G. Blair, 62, of San Angelo died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, in a San Angelo hospital.
Service will be a 3Pm.m Wednesday at First Baptist church with burial in Foster Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home.
He was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Blackwell and had been a resident of San Angelo for six years. He was the co-owner of the White buffalo Environmental Services and was a member of Northridge Baptist Church in San Angelo.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Blair of San Angelo; four children, Laurie Colvert of Sterling City, Ross Blair of Pleasanton, Gary Prather of Delaware Water Gap, Pa. and Tracy Prather of Austin; a brother Billy Darrel Blair of Water Valley; his mother Helen Blair of Sterling City; and an aunt.

Sterling City -- Ethel Blair, 93, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, in Sterling County Nursing Home. She was born May 16, 1911, to M. W. and Minnie Smith in New Mexico. Ethel lived in Sterling County most of her life and spent two years in New Mexico as a child. On Oct. 26, 1935, Ethel married John I. Blair. Out of that union was born one son, Billy Joe Blair. Ethel and John were married for 57 years until John's death in 1993.
John and Ethel moved to Mertzon, Texas, in 1940 and worked on the Martin Reed Ranch for 16 years, the birthplace of their son. In July 1956, Ethel and her family returned to Sterling City, and lived the remainder of her life in Sterling City. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and three brothers. Ethel is survived by her son, Billy Joe
Blair and wife Danna of Sterling City; one sister Babe Keller and husband Jack of California; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at the Church of Christ in Sterling City. Sterling City John I. Blair, 84, died at 4:20 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1993, in Concho Valley Regional Hospital.
He was born July 22, 1908, to T. J. and Florence Blair in Sterling City in Sterling County. He lived in Sterling city most of his life and spent two years in Arizona as a child. On Oct. 26, 1935, John Married Etherl Smith. Out of that union was born one son, Billy Joe Blair.

Sterling City William Franklin "Bill" Blair Jr. passed away on Saturday, , at the age of 84.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday June 17, at the First Baptist church with the Rev. David Burke and the Rev. Earl Blair officiating. Burial will follow in Foster Cemetery. arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home.
He was born to William Franklin Blair Sr. and Samantha Blair on March 21, 1913 in Nolan Co. Texas. On Oct 19, 1933 he married Helen Lois Wilhelm in Nolan County. He was a resident of Sterling County for 56 years. Ranching was his life.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen glair; two sons, Bob Blair and wife, Carol, of San Angelo and Billy Blair and Wife, Nettie, of Water Valley; two brothers John Blair of Sterling city and Curtis Blair of Robert Lee; two sisters, Verna Bell Robertson of Odessa and Samantha Robertson of Robert Lee; one granddaughter, Laurie Colvert and he husband, Shawn; four grandson, Ross Blair and wife, Karleen, of Pleasanton, Thomas Blair and wife Helen, of Weatherford, Okla., Todd Blair and wife, Casey and Tim Blair and wife, Pam, all of San Angelo; four great-grandsons, Shelby Colver, Cody Blair, Erric Blair and Travis Blair; three great-granddaughters, Meghan Blair, Shanna Blair and Brandee Blair; two stepgrandsons, Gary Prather and Tracy Prather; three step-granddaughters, Amanda Bishop, Brooke Stuardt and Nicole Prather; two step-great-grandsons Brandon Prather and Patrick Prather; and also a sister-in-aw Allene Wilhelm, and a brother-in-law Wallace Wilhelm.

Commander Charles Bright

Charles Norman Bright, son of Charley and Winnie Dunn Bright, was born September 17, 1936, during the flood of '36, in Sterling City. Dr. Swann had to wade in water up to his boot tops on 2nd Street to deliver him at his Grandmother Dunn's house. The Sterling City depot picture has Charles' grandfather, Charley Dunn, standing by his Dunn Bros. Transfer co. Wagon and two white horses. Charles joined the navy in 1955 as a Seaman, spent 30 years on active duty and retired December 31, 1985, at the rank of commander. Among his duty stations as an enlisted man were San Diego, CA, Newport, RI and New London CT. He was accepted in the Navy enlisted Education Program in 1960 and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN where he grated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. As an officer, he served aboard several destroyers; among them were the USS Wedderman, USS Radford, USS Haverfield, USS Charles Berry and the USS Hamner. The last six years of his naval career were spent in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, serving on the Third Fleet Staff working and Reserves. In his navy life, he was in Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Rhode Island, Washington and Viet Nam. The last nine years of his life were spent teaching and inspiring students at Phillips College and the Southwest School of Electronics in Austin. He died at his home in Austin on February 12, 1998, of natural causes and is survived by his wife Patsy; daughter Kenda; grand children Joshua and Marah, mother, Winnie Bright. sister, Elgene Whittaker; and brothers Chester and Jimmy Bright. Also surviving are an aunt, Mrs. C.J.Dunn of Sterling City and first cousins; Pat Dunn Porter of Big Spring, Carolyn Dunn Wright and Darla Kay Dunn Root of Kerrville, Johnny King of Rochelle, Harry King of big Lake, Janell King Groves of Big Spring, Boyd Carpenter of Bakersfield CA, Bobby Dunn of Clint, Barba Dunn Clanton of Blooming Grove and Beverly Dunn Howard and Betty Dunn Glass of Sterling City. Commander Charles Bright will be buried at sea.

Colorado City - Ann Browne, 54, of Sterling City died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at her residence.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Sterling City with burial in Colorado City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
She was born Feb. 17. 1945, in Colorado City and had been a resident of Sterling City for 33 years. She was the dietitian for the Sterling City school cafeteria and a member of First Baptist Church in Sterling City.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Browne of Sterling City; two sons, Michael Browne of Sterling City adn Randall Browne of Ovalo; her mother and stepfather, Jan and Doyle Caulder of Colorado City; and four grandchildren.
Robbie Franklin Burns

Robbin Franklin burns was born April 5, 1903 in Van Zandt County, Texas, the son of George and Oleva Burns. He died Saturday, January 25, 1997 at his residence in Sterling city. He worked for the Highway Department of Texas for almost 40 years in different areas of Texas. He also worked on several ranches and a farm in various areas. He worked in Sterling city on jobs while he was working for the Highway Department. After retirement from the Highway Department in 1965, he worked with various horses on ranches in Sterling county until 1984. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Ligon Burns, whom he married in 1949; two sisters Lillie Montitihe of Hawkins and Bessie Booth of Odessa; one brother, George burns Jr. of Odessa, several nieces and nephews and several family friends. Gravesides service was held on January 27 in Montvale Cemetery with David Burk officiating. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Oliver Waverly Cole of Dallas, died in Dallas on November 4, 1996, following a brief illness. He was born on April 21, 1913, to Frank and Katherine Crain Cole in Sterling City. He married Lois Gurley on May 12, 1951. Graveside service was held on Wednesday afternoon at Sterling City Cemetery with David Clayton and Sons Funeral Home in Duncanville in charge.
Virginia Lee Gay Copeland

On Saturday, January 10, 1998, West Texas lost one of its greatest ladies. Virginia Lee Gay Copeland, 75, passed away in the midst of participating in yet another of her beloved community's affairs. Virginia was born January 5, 1923 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Alex Gay and Jennie McKissick Gay. She was raised in Cherokee, texas, and graduated from Cherokee High School. A graduate of Shannon Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a registered nurse for 35 years and served as director of Nursing in Sterling city. Since moving Sterling City in 1945, she devoted her life to taking care of her community. Virginia assisted with many births in Sterling county and continued to have a positive impact on the health and lives of many in the county even after her retirement from nursing. Virginia married John Copeland, Jr., on January 12, 1945, and lived and ranched on the Divide in Sterling county. John remained the love of her life for 53 years. The center of her family's life, she was an avid supporter of the activities of her children and grandchildren. "Meme" to her grandchildren and their friends, Virginia's oven was always open to welcome them into her home. Her care and concern will truly be missed along with all the good food so livingly prepared and shared. She was a member of First United Methodist church in Sterling City and was active in community activities. Virginia enjoyed extensive travel with her many friends and family. Virginia was proceeded in death by her parents and a brother, Lester Gay. Virginia is survived by a daughter Janie Copeland Anderson, and son-in-law Roland Anderson of Dallas, and a son John Gay Copeland, of Sterling city, Texas. She is also survived by fine grandchildren, Christian gay Anderson and Melissa Jan Anderson, both of Dallas and Amy Leigh Copeland, Jennifer Kelley Copeland, and John Ross Copeland, all of Sterling city, she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist church in Sterling city with Dr. Shane Barnes officiating. Burial followed in Montvale Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ross Funeral Home.

Walter R. Davis, 94, departed this life on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 from a long lengthy illness. He was born on July 18, 1909 at Sterling City, Texas. Walter left this life as a Christian and his next breath was with Christ his savior. Walter and Janet served the Lord ministering to shut-ins and hospital patients. He taught Sunday school and had bible classes in apartment complexes. He was a devoted member of Gardendale Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his mother Lucy, and father Roy; two sons: Leslie and Jack Davis.
Walter is survived by his wife Janet M. Davis; two sons: Roy Davis (Shirley) of Houston, Texas, Perry Davis (Edna) of New Boston, Texas; one daughter Betty Mahan of Euless, Texas. He has 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 1, 2003 from 1:00 pm. until 8:00 pm Saturday, August 2, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. until service.
Service will be held Saturday, August 2, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at Seaside Funeral Chapel. Interment to follow.

San Angelo - M. Louise Ditmore, 90, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in a local nursing home. Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in Montvale Cemetery in Sterling City. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Foster and Thelma Ditmore of San Angelo; one brother, Thomas E. Merrell of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Norene Garms of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Marveletta Hudspeth of Abilene, Texas; three grandchildren and their spouses, Charles and Diane Ditmore of San Angelo, Dewayne and Shawna Ditmore of Red Oak, Texas, Cynthia Ditmore of San Angelo; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Todd Ditmore and Haley Ann Ditmore. She is also survived by special friends, Bill and Alice Herman, and Joel and Julia Gilstrap. M. Louise also leaves behind her adopted grandkids, Brandy, Casey, Justin Herman, Blake and Jarrett Gilstrap; numerous nieces and nephews; and all her babysitting kids. San Angelo -- Services for Dr. D'Ann Ducote, age 58, of Sterling City, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, in Johnson's Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ted Dotts officiating. D'Ann left this world Saturday, Oct. 23, at her residence on Cox Hollow Ranch. She was born to Rosemary and C.T. Ducote on July 31, 1946, in Abilene, Texas. She graduated from San Angelo State University with a degree in English. She went on to further her education by earning her master's degree from West Texas State University. She was awarded her Doctorate of Philosophy in Family Studies from Texas Tech University in 1970. Over the years she helped many people through personal and family counseling. Furthermore, she acted as a mentor and professor to a variety of students at Texas Tech. D'Ann remained a persistent educator during her life whether she was in the classroom or on horseback. Her greatest pleasure was found on her ranch surrounded by nature and in the saddle. She will always be remembered for her strength of character, honesty and integrity. Survivors include her daughter, Audra Day and husband, Miles; two granddaughters, Hannah and Micah Day, all of Lubbock; her father and stepmother, C.T. and Billey Ducote of San Angelo; a brother, Michael Ducote and wife, Peggy, of Mullin, Texas; nephews, Brandon Ducote and wife, Chad Ducote and wife, Staci, Ceyork Ducote, and niece, Kasey Cross; a sister, Linda Eschman of Mullin, Texas; nephew, Jeff Eschman and wife, Jill; and niece, Kristen Eschman. C.J. Dunn, 68, Buried
C.J. Dunn, 68, died Feb. 2 at his home.
Charlie Jasper Dunn was born May 3, 1903 in Sterling City, the son of Charlie and Clara Dunn and the grandson of Henry C. and Bettie Dunn, early pioneer settlers of Sterling County.
C.J. married Evelyn Hallmark, daughter of Luke and Nora Hallmark on June 24, 1934.
C.J. was a Baptist and a long-time cowboy, a carpenter and a contractor for pear digging and fence building with his father-in-law Luke Hallmark.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Bobby Dunn of Socorro; three daughters, Mrs. Betty Glass and Mrs. Beverly Miller, both of Sterling City; and Mrs. Barba Clanton of Fort Davis; one brother, Denver Dunn of Big Spring; three sisters Mrs. Winnie Bright of Sterling City, Mrs. Dale King of Mercury and Mrs. Clara Belle Mullins of Bakersfield, Calif, and thirteen grandchildren.
Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist church and burial was in Montvale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John I. Blair, Foster Sims Price, Dayton Barrett, Charlie Davis, John Brock, Bill Humble and Ralph Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Fowler McEntire, Dr. W.J. Swann, Tom Hunble, Will Durham and Viril Brownfield.
"He was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor, and a Christian in all the name implies. A good man has gone to his eternal heritage. We are among those who mourn his passing."

Sterling City -- Glen Evelyn Hallmark Dunn of Sterling City died June 12, 2002. She was born Aug. 6, 1917 in Houston County. She was married to C.J. Dunn and has four children, Betty, Bobby, Barba and Beverly. Evelyn was a member of the First Baptist Church and had worked as a nurse's aide at the nursing home, Chapple's Food Store, John Brock's Grocery and J.C. Penney in Alpine and Midland. She was honored as a Sterling county Pioneer during the Sterling County Millennium Celebration. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.J. Dunn; her parents, Luther and Glennora Hallmark; her brother, L.B. Hallmark; her sister, Maudine Hallmark Marlow; a grandson, Danny Glass and one great-granddaughter, Amanda Anderson. She is survived by her sister, Albertine Hallmark Josey; two aunts, Buena Hallmark Davis of Corpus Christi and Gladys Turner of San Angelo; four children, Betty Dunn Glass and husband, Can, Bobby Dunn and wife, Raye, of Clint, Barba Dunn Clanton and husband, Robert of Blooming Grove and Beverly Dunn Howard and husband, Don; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Service was held in Montvale Cemetery in Sterling City, Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m.

Noemi Garcia Castro, 64, died Saturday, November 29th in Sterling county Nursing Home. She was born August 10, 1933, in Trapuato, Guanajato, Mexico. She and Roman were married on March 3, 1956, in Acuna Coah, Mexico. Roman brought Noemi and their children to Sterling City in 1962, Noemi was a loving wife and devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and family. Noemi is survived by her husband of 41 years, Roman, Also by her sons Pete and his wife Nell their children Adrian and Spencer. Roman and his wife Rose, and Joe his wife Dora and their children Joe Jr, Patricia and David. Also surviving are her brothers, and sisters, Samuel Garcia, Raquel Lopez, Jose Garcia, Estella Garcia, Daniel Garcia, Sarah Martinez, and Justino Garcia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Refugia Garcia an infant son, her daughter Patricia, and two sisters Mercedes and Adela. Noemi was a loving friend to everyone she met, and she will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral Services Today for Hardware Man
Roy L. Jackson, 36, manager of the paint department at the B & H Hardware Co. died at 6:30 o'clock last night in a local hospital. He had been ill for about nine days.
Funeral rites will be held from Johnson's Chapel at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon with the Rev. A. C. Knight officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery. Mt. Jackson was a member of the Church of Christ here. He had been employed at his last position since November, having worked for the previous 12 years at the Miller Paint Co. He came here from Brownwood.
Survivors are the widow; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Sawyers of New York state and Mrs. Clarence Harvy, Santa Anna; and a grandmother, Mrs. Della Bailey, Santa Anna.
Pallbearers are Charles Rose, Joe Howard, Dick Swindell, John E. Robbins, Jr., Alva Oliver and Lois McMurtrey. Honorary pallbearers are P. B. Wilson, Will Kemp, Ransom Reynolds, George Young, John Russell, and Percy Head.

She was born July 24, 1936, in San Angelo. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, @Winn McClure of Sterling City; a daughter, Debbie Foster of Greenwood; two sons, Curtis McClure of Greenville, S.C. and Bobby McClure of Sterling City; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Cecile Reed McDonald, 84, died peacefully Dec. 10, 2003, in San Angelo. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the O.T. Jones Auditorium on the Sterling City school campus.
Services are under the direction of Ross Funeral Home of Sterling City and will be conducted by Rick Cunningham and Don Davis. The family and Cecile will be at the home of LeRuth and Danny Stewart, on the Robert Lee Highway in Sterling City, prior to the services. Lunch will be provided for out-of-town guests and friends at the Sterling City Community Center.

Sterling City-- Chesley McDonald, a longtime Sterling city rancher and member of Abilene Christian University's Board of Trustees, died Friday at his home.

Survivors include his wife of Sterling City; a son, Dr. Don R. McDonald of Salado; two daughters, Celia Davis of Abilene and Jeanie Bird of San Angelo; two brothers, J.B. McDonald of Little Rock, Ark., and Orville McDonald of Dallas; two sisters, Violet Irwin of Evermand and Mildred Rice of Baytown; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Greg and Nicole McDonald, Heath Hughes, Hayley Mason, Jena Allen and Will and Wesley Davis.
Estelle Lowe Parker

Estelle Lowe Parker passed away Saturday, August 30, 1997, after a long and full life. Soon after she was born in Montgomery, Louisiana, he family moved to Sterling City, She went to Dallas to Attend SMU and taught English before meeting and marrying Kenneth H. Parker. Mrs. Parker was an active member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church until he health failed A devoted Sunday school teacher, she used her talent as a pianist to teach young children their first hymns. The Dallas community benefited from her dedicated volunteerism. She served terms a president of the Charlene Palmer Garden Club, the SMS Mother's Association, and chaired committees for numerous organizations, such as the Dallas Symphony League, the Dallas Opera Association, and the DAR. Mrs. Parker is survived by her granddaughter Cynthia Louise Reid of Dallas, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Roland Lowe of Sterling city, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held on Tuesday September 2, 1997, in Wynne Chapel of Highland Park Presbyterian church.
Fannie Belle "Pickey" Martin Pilcher

Fannie Belle Pilcher, better known as Pickey, of San Angelo passed away on Saturday, May 2, 1998 in a San Angelo nursing home at the age of 90. Graveside service was held on Tuesday May 5 in Foster Cemetery. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home. Pickey was born January 4, 1908 in Tupelo, Mississippi to Larkin Walker and Ider Belle Richardson. She was predeceased by her first husband, Williams Levi Martin of Sterling City, in 1967, and by her second husband John H. Pilcher of San Angelo in 1996. She was a longtime resident of Sterling City and served as hostess at the community center. She was also a dietitian at Sterling county Hospital. She is survived by two brothers, George Richardson and Joe B Richardson both of Houston;' and three sisters, Lucy Phipps and Babe Logan, both of San Angelo and Elizabeth Naron of Houston. she also is survived by nieces, Patsy Blair of San Angelo and Florence Mullins of Irving; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Trinon Revell passed away Monday, May 6, 1996.

Houston--- Mr. Revell was a member of Westbury Baptist church and Houston Lodge 151 BPO ELKS.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is durvived by his wife of 56 years; Marie; daughters, Trina Frier and husband, Jay, of Houston, and Janice Kasten and husband, Henry, of Euless; grandsons, both of whom are his namesakes, James Trinon Frier and Aaron Revell Kasten; Grandaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Kasten.
Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 in the Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home.
A second service will be at 10 A.m. Thursday May 9, at First Baptist Church in Sterling city with burial in the city cemetery in Sterling City.

Hilario Barrea Rodriguez, 80, of Robert Lee and formerly of Sterling City, passed away Friday, July 18, 1997, at his residence. Service was Sunday, July 20, at the First Baptist church of Sterling City. Burial was in the city Cemetery, Directed by Ross Funeral Home. He was born July 12, 1917, in Sheffield, Texas. He lived in Sanderson and moved to Sterling city in 1931 with his parents, Benijo and Juanita Rodriguez. He married Siriaca Longoria on October 5, 1940. They lived in Sterling City until 1981 when they moved to Robert Lee, where he resided for the past 16 years. He was a retired laborer.
Survivors include one son and his wife, Josue "Jody" and Susan Rodriguez of Robert Lee; two daughters, Carolina Garcia and Ernestina Gaitan and husband, Pilo, of Sterling City eleven grandchildren 16 grand-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews one brother, the Rev Crescento Rodriguez of Mertzon and one sister, Manuela Rodriguez of Sterling City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Siriaca; three brothers; one son-in-law and one great grandchild.

Sterling City - Daisy N. Smith, 88, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1992, in the Sterling County Nursing Home.
Service will be at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday with interment in the Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring. Arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home.
Daisy married R. T. Smith Sr. on Aug. 19, 1922, in Sterling City, Texas. She had lived in Sterling City sine 1936. She was a retired cafe cook.
She was preceded in death by R. T. Smith Sr. and one daughter, Ruth Smith in 1989.
Survivors include two sons, R. T. Smith Jr. of Ballwin, Mo., and Eugene Smith of Salinas, Colo., and three sisters, Ethel Blair of Sterling City, Maude Middleton of Afton and Beatrice Keller of Tyler.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

R. G. "Bob" Strom, 73, of San Angelo, Texas, died at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 1996 at his residence. Mr. Strom was born June 29, 1923, in Ballinger, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater Operation for three years. He was a supervisor for Harris Auto Supply and was married to Marylene Story on March 9, 1946, in Sterling city, and he was a member of First Christian Church. Graveside service was at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov.1, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Johnson' Funeral Home.
Dr. William J. Swann

William Joseph Swann, M.D. passed away Thursday, August 28, 1997, in the Sterling County Nursing Home. Services were at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 1, at the First United Methodist church in Sterling city, officiated by Rev. Bill Harris of Del Rio and former pastor of the church. Burial followed at Montvale Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ross Funeral Home. Dr. Swann was born October 27, 1900 in Wedowee, Alabama. He graduated from Randolph County (Alabama) High School in 196, attended the University of Alabama and received his M.D. degree from Emory University Medical School in 1924. He was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. He interned at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and Shreveport Charity Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1925 he began practice in Roscoe, Texas, later moving to Mississippi and Alabama. He married Opal Chumley of Bronte, Texas on June 14, 1926. He has resided in Sterling city since 1930. He served on Shannon Medical Center (obstetrics) and worked with several surgeons. Dr. Swann was instrumental in the building of the hospital here in Sterling City. He was active in the First United Methodist church, serving as chairman of the administrative board among other duties. He was a charter member and past president of the Tom Green 8 County Medical Society, and a life member of the Concho Valley Medical Society, as well as a life member of the Texas Medical Society, The American Medical Association of Family Physicians and was an honorary editor for the journal FAMILY PHYSICIAN. He was also associated with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Dr. Swann has been a member of the Sterling County Hospital and Nursing Home Board, a district medical advisor for the Boy Scouts of America, a volunteer medical examiner for the Selective Service during World War II, a member, past master and 50 year Mason of the Sterling Lodge, a member of the royal Arch Masonic Lodge, and the Lions club. He served as County Health Officer. He practiced medicine in Sterling County until he retired in 1987. By Texas State Senate Proclamation, he was declared a treasured citizen of his town and state on the occasion of 91st birthday. In 1980 he was honored in Sterling city for 50 years of service to the community. He is preceded in death by his wife, Opal. Survivors include a son, William J. Swann, Jr. of Irvin, Texas a sister Nancy Griffin of Roanoke, Alabama; nieces Glenda Hale of Roanoke, Alabama, Sarah Risley of Durham, NC. Louise Leonard and Jo Collier of San Angelo, Lana Chumley of Fairfax, VA and nephews John Swann of Wedowee, Alabama, James Crosland of Miami FL, Wayne and J.F. McCabe of Robert Lee, Sam Cchumley of Katy, Texas and Victory McCabe of Ruidoso, NM.

I. W. Terry, prominent Sterling County rancher, died Friday, at his home. He was born in Colorado City, Texas, March 7, 1925.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday , July 14, in Sterling City at the First United Methodist Church, where he was a longtime member. The Rev. Shane Barnes will be officiating. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Homes.
Mr. Terry was a native of Colorado City. He attended Texas Tech University. He served in the Army in 1944-45 in Okinawa and Japan. He was active in the community in FFA and 4-H. He served on the Sterling City School Board and the Appraisal Board.
Also, he was a director of the Central National Bank of San Angelo, director of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association, president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association and ranched in Sterling, Irion, Coke, Crockett, Mitchell and Reagan counties.
He was married to Carolyn Foster on Aug 12, 1950.
He was preceded in death by his parents, I. W. and Ernia Terry.
Survivors are his wife, Carolyn; his son Jim and wife Sunni, of Sterling City; two daughters, Susan and husband Doug Connolly, of Austin and Melinda and husband, Jim Hinds of Irving; five grandchildren, Clay and Kelly Townsend of Austin and Rachel, Rebecca and Ryder Hinds of Irving; and a sister Joan Inman.
The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Sterling City, West Texas Boys Ranch and West Texas Rehabilitation Centers.
Jack Flint Turner

Jack Flint Turner, 77, of San Angelo, formerly of Dallas and Sterling City passed away on Thursday, August 31, 1995 at his residence, after a lengthy illness. Graveside service was on Saturday, September 2, 1995 in Foster Cemetery of Sterling City, Lynn Young, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church in San Angelo officiated. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home. Jack, or Paw Paw, to his granddaughters, was born August 29, 1918, in Ballinger to the late Ernest and Carrie Turner. He attended Ballinger schools and entered the U.S. Air Force around 1940. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Upon returning home from the service, he began working on the Cole Ranch in Sterling city. At this time he met his future wife, Mary Ann Bynum. They later married in 1947. Jack began a long and successful career in the service station business with Humble, which later became Exxon. He owned and operated Humble, Enco and Exxon stations in Sterling City, San Angelo and Dallas. Jack and Mary Ann returned to San Angelo upon their retirement in 1986. His greatest joy was his three girls: his daughter and his two granddaughters Melissa and Melinda, who were the light of his life. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann, and a sister, Roxy Brock. Survivors include a daughter, Lou Ann Pratz of Irving; his granddaughters, Melissa and Melinda Pratz of Irving: a devoted sister, Norma Jean Canada of San Angelo; a sister-in-law, Patsy Bynum of Sterling city: three nieces, Jackie Mendiola of Miles, Judy Jackson of San Angelo and Patti May of Wall; three nephews, Mike Canada of San Angelo, Bobby Bynum of Rankin and Tommy Bynum of Snyder; and also numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

Elsie Allene Wilhelm died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Sterling County Nursing Home. Service was at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the First Baptist Church with David Burk officiating. Interment followed in Foster Cemetery with arrangements by Ross Funeral Home. Allene was a member of the Baptist church and was actively involved in the Sterling county Senior Citizens Association. She was born in Comanche, attended school and graduated from Blackwell High School in Blackwell. She began her career as a telephone operator fro FTE in Sterling city and was transferred to San Angel9o, where she worked until retirement. Allene was preceded in death by her parents, E.T. and Zona Elsie Wilhelm; two brothers, Dan and Tobe Wilhelm; a brother-in-law, Bill Blair; and a nephew, Bobby G. Blair. She is survived by a sister, Helen Blair of Sterling City; a brother, Wallace Wilhelm and his wife Elaine, of Odessa, a nephew, Billy D. Blair and wife, Nettie of Water Valley; Carol Blair of San Angelo; and nieces and nephews, Laurie and Shawn Colver, Toss and Carlene Blair, Thomas Blair, Tim and Pam Blair, Todd and Casey Blair, Sherry and David Wishert, Susan and Henry Novak, Larry Wilhelm, Barry Wilhelm and Will Wilhelm.
