Submitted by: Jim CULVER
Mr. Charles Louis (Lewis) Adkinson was born October 26, 1866 in the state of Arkansas, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Adkinson. He moved at an early date to Texas with his parents, settling at Iredell. When a young, man he was converted and joined the Baptist church, and remained a member until the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Miss Julia Arington, and to this union six children were born, two of whom with their mother preceded him in death. He was married to Miss Kenny Acrey Sept. 4, 1904, and to this union eight children were born, two of whom preceded their father in death. Mr. Adkinson died Nov. 18, 1943, being 77 years and 22 days of age. He had many friends here as he had lived here for many years. He was well liked by all, was a good old man, tried to do all the good he could. He was of a friendly turn, would speak to one and all. He would go to town most every day, which he enjoyed doing, and also enjoyed church services. He is missed very much by his wife, children and friends. He lived out his days. God called him and he went home to rest forever more. He was a good husband and father. Besides the widow of Iredell, he is survived by three sons, Ray (Roy) of Fort Worth, U.S. Navy; Earl of California, and Earnest of the U.S. Navy and seven daughters, Mrs. Kate Ward of Gatesville, Mrs. Ruby Murphy of Big Spring, Mrs. Nevada Howard of Iredell, Mrs. Opal Reed and Doris Reed of California; also 28 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and one brother, Andy, of Iredell, and one sister, Mrs. Delice Spinks of Hico. The funeral was held in the Baptist church Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends. Rev. Cundieff, the pastor, delivered the funeral sermon and paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. The floral offerings were large and beautiful. Internment was in the Riverside Cemetery. Mrs. Adkinson and children have the sympathy of their friends, for which they are very lonely without him. A large crowd of out of town relatives and friends attended the funeral. All the children attended except the two from California. Mrs. Doris Reed and Earnest, also of California, came after the funeral. The son remained a few days, Mrs. Doris Reed is here with her mother, and may remain till the first of January.

Ole A Canuteson
Submitted by: Christine Neal
Mr. Ole A. Canuteson, who first saw light of day on April 29,1834, near Rochester, New York and who had been slowly declining for the last few years, Quietly passed away on January 16,1920, at the ripe old age of 86 years, 8 months and 18 days. On Sunday afternoon his remains were interred in the Norse Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. J.K. Rystad pronouncing the last sad rites in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Deceased leaves on daughter, four sons, 15 grand children, and four great grand children, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was naturally of a kind hearted, benevolent, modest, and unassuming disposition, an honest, upright and conscientious man; a faithful and devoted husband; a kind father; a fine neighbor and a good man. His parents were among the old pioneers who blazed the way in the wilderness, and came on the sloop, being the first immigrants from Norway who arrived in 1825, settling near Rochester, New York, where the subject was born. His parents and the infant, Ole, soon moved to La Salle County, Illinois, where they helped establish the "Fox River Settlement", the first permanent Norwegian Settlement in America. Mr. O.A. Canuteson and family moved to Bosque County, Texas, in the spring of 1859 and helped establish the Norse Norwegian Settlement. He, thus, endured the drawbacks and hardships of a frontier, pioneer life both in Illinois and Texas. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was a true and conscientious liberal until within two years of his death when he was baptized and, practically, joined the Lutheran Church, evidently for satisfaction and his soul's salvation. Another old pioneer gone to his eternal abode and reward. Peace to his ashes. May his memory ever remain fresh. His surviving children were: Daughter: Cora Olivia Canuteson Aulie; Sons: Halvar, Andrew, Albert L., Alferd Severin; Deceased Children: Daughters: Mary Ann (Anna Marie) Canuteson Christenson, Julie Helen, Elisabeth; Son: Canute; Wives: Ingeborg (1870), Christina (1891), Martha (1919)

Mary Jane Dunlap
Meridian Tribune, June 15, 1945
Mrs. Mary Jane Dunlap Passes Away
The column rules of this page are "turned" this week in the newspaper's traditional mourning for Mrs. Mary Jane Dunlap, wife, co-partner and helpmate of The Tribune editor for more than forty-five years, who passed away at the Holt Hospital Monday, June 11, 1945, at 5:45 o'clock p.m., at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 13 days. Stricken with paralysis, she had been removed from her home to the hospital Tuesday night of last week, where all the care of skilled physicians and nurses and the love of an anxious family and friends could devise for her comfort and assistance were brought into play, but the Hand of Death could not be stayed. Although she had been in ill health for many years, she was able to enjoy life fully until about two weeks before her death, and by a strong determination and well-regulated life, survived more than twenty years longer than some of the best medical experts predicted when she suffered an earlier stroke. Funeral services were held at the Meridian Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, conducted by Revs. B. L. McCord and J. M. Jordan, local pastors, Rev. Chas. Estes, pastor of the First Presybterian[sic] church of Whitesboro, a friend of the deceased since childhood, and Rev. H. M. Hopkins, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Itasca. A large congregation of sorrowing relatives, neighbors and friends were present to pay last respects to the memory of deceased, who was loved by many. Her favorite hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Does Jesus Care," and her husband's favorite, "Garden of Prayer," were touchingly rendered by the choir, and by special request of the family, Mrs. Elmo Alexander sang "Face to Face." Trlbute to her good life and Christian character was paid by the speakers. Then she was laid to rest in the family plot in Meridian Cemetery to await the Resurrection Morn. A profusion of flowers of extraordinary beauty and of the kind she loved, the tribute of loving relatives and friends, were banked about the casket at the service and grave. Mrs. Dunlap was a native of Bosque county and made her home among its hospitable people that she loved her entire life. She was born near Valley Mills, November 28, 1875, a daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. J. W. Adams, themselves native Texans and pioneer citizens of this section. She moved to Meridian with her parents when, a young girl, and continued to reside here until her death. Here she attended school and became an accomplished musician, and later a teacher of music. In early girlhood she professed religion and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and for many years was director of the choir and organist and an active worker in other church activities here. She was married to Levi A. Dunlap here on February 7, 1900. To the union four children were born, who, together with her husband, survive. They are: Moran Dunlap, Meridian; Mrs. Irene Wiginton, Itasca; Artie R. Dunlap, Waco, and Jay Teel Dunlap, Fort Worth. Although she continued active in her church, after her marriage she retired from her music to devote her time to her household and family. Then as her children grew up, and though her health was even then poor, she again became active in church and civic endeavors and movements for the improvement of her town and people. In World War I she served as chairman of a successful Red Cross membership campaign. Despite ill health, she was an active member of the Meridian Garden Club, Study Club, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Woodman[sic] Circle at the time of her death. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church having disbanded here some years ago, on Feb. 11 this year, she and her husband united with the Meridian Methodist Church, and she had attended its services faithfully whenever health permitted. In the presence of such sorrow, how cold and impotent are words, how insufficient any tribute we could pay! We know that her home instincts were strong, and that her affection for friends and kindred were tender and abiding, that she ranked as a woman of culture, refinement, sympathy, that she loved beautiful things, was a kind neighbor, faithful wife, devoted mother, true friend, and with all a woman of heroic mould in bravely meeting the stern requirements and often the disappointments of life. To her the struggle and burden-bearing of earth are ended, and we confidently trust that like one who awakes from a troubled dream, she has awakened to see life's endless morning break. How doubly deep would be the grief did not the rainbow of Christian hope span the dark gulf between time and Eternity, and such a life inspire the faith that there is a better World Beyond where the good and true are reunited!
Besides her husband and children, she is survived by four grandchildren, Norma Dell Dunlap, Waco; James Dunlap Wiginton, Itasca, and Jay Teel Jr. and Jane Dunlap, Fort Worth; four sisters, Mrs. Julia Moss, Mrs. Ed Johnson and Mrs. Glad Snograss, Floydada. and Mrs. C. Anna Elizabeth Golden
Submitted by: Edward L. WILLIAMS
Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Golden, wife of S. D. (sic) Golden and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hendricks, died very suddenly Monday morning at her home in this City. She was not in the best of health but no one thought of her condition being serious in the least and when the news spread from house to house at an early hour Monday morning that Mrs. Golden was dead, it was a shock to the people. She had for some time been aflicted with a bad cough but had readily yielded to treatment and everyone thought she would live for many years to come. During the night Sunday night she had a bad coughing spell but after taking one dose of cough medicine she again fell asleep as did Mr. Golden, and slept until 4 o'clock Monday morning when she was seized with another spell, and this attack failed to yield to medicine and she died in about fifteen, before the doctor could reacher her though he lived but a block or two away. Mrs. Golden was born in the State of Alabama Oct 21st, 1872, and was therefore 41years old last October. She was married to S. E. Golden in 1888, to which union ten children were born and were all present at some time during the time the family was passing through through the sad ordeal. She leaves a fathful mother, one sister, three brothers and a husband and ten children, four of whom are married and six at home, to mourn her departure, but they sorrow not as those who have no hope. Mrs. Golden was a good christian woman having been a faithful and true member of the Methodist church since she was 12 years old, and in all the checkered scenes of life through which she was called to pass, she never wavered in her religious life, but remained true and faithful until she was called to enter the church above. The last words she spoke were: "The Lord has called for me and I am ready to go." and fell asleep in Jesus. The funeral service was conducted in the Methodist church on March 2nd, by her old friend, W. V. Jones, in the presence of a large crowd of sympathizing friends. At the close of the service at the church the remains were borne to the Riverside Cemetery where they were gently laid to rest to await the resurrection day. All who knew Mrs. Golden could join in saying that a good woman has been translated from this world of sorrow and stife to the Country where sorrow is unknown, and where it is eternal day. The Record joins the many friends in extended sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.
Notes: Anna was the daughter of Willis Hardick & Sarah Ann (Cox) Hendricks. She married Seaborn Emory Golden on Nov 26, 1888, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

Sarah or Grannie as she was forever called was born March 9, 1842 in Cahaiba, Selma County Alabama. Early in life she professed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and ever afterwards remained a Christian and loyal member. She was frank and positive in her convictions but she always exercised a loving spirit which had good results. Grannie was exceptionally full of life and jolly for one so advanced in years and physical liabilities. Though she suffered greatly she seldomly complained. She bore her ailments like a tried soldier of the cross. She seldom got to attend church but her faith always remained unshaken. At her only daughter's house at Hico, Texas, Aug 17, 1919, Granny Hendricks pure spirit took its flight and winged itself back to God who gave it. Her remains were brought here and laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. May the good father of all comfort her aged companion the three sons and the daughter who were left behind to morn their loss. H. A. Nichols, Pastor, Iredell, Texas

William Mills Myers

from The Walnut Springs Hustler
William Mills Myers was born at Montgomery, Alabama, on August 13, 1857, and died at Portland, San Patricio County, Texas, on Friday night, October 4, 1935, at the age of 78 years. Special funeral services were held at Sinton, twenty miles north of Portland, on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. F. P. Bishop, pastor of the Sinton church presiding. Rev. M. H. Keen, pastor of the Portland Methodist Church, gave the funeral address. He was also assisted by Rev. W. S. Highsmith and Rev. J. E. Lovett, pastors of the Taft and Corpus Christi South Bluff Methodist Churches, respectively. Friends from Portland, Corpus Christ, San Antonio, Brownsville, Taft, and other cities joined the large assemblage of old friends of Sinton and community in paying a last tribute of respect to the memory of a good man and former citizen. Mr. Myers, universally known and lovingly called "Uncle Billy," had aided in building the church in which these services were held and a memorial window stands a memorial to his love and loyalty to his church while a member there. The funeral party left Sinton at 5:00 o'clock and drove to San Antonio where they spent the night and came on here the next day, arriving late Sunday night. A number of friends awaited them at the Methodist Church. The casket was placed near the altar and a vigil kept by friends during the remainder of the night. Funeral services were conducted on Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock in the church he helped to build more than 27 years ago.
Rev. R. W. Nation, local pastor, was in charge of the services, and Mrs. L. R. Whiteley directed the music. Dr. E. B. Hawk, now dean of Theology at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and former pastor here during the years of 1909-1910, and a devoted friend of Mr. Myers, delivered the sermon based on the 14th chapter of the gospel of John. With tenderness and great understanding he told of his association with and lover for "Uncle Billy," and bore testimony to his beautiful spirit and undying fidelity to Christ and His church. A more eloquent funeral address was never in this city. Rev. O. C. Crow, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Brownsville, and a son-in-law of the deceased, spoke briefly in tribute to the life and character of "the man I loved as I loved no other man except my own father who died three weeks before. The floral offerings, which were beautiful, were banked high along the chancel and about the casket and spoke in silent but in beautiful eloquence of the high esteem in which Mr. Myers was held by the hundreds of people of this and other sections of the state. The remains were laid to rest in the family plat in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Myers was married three times. His first wife, Miss Lola McKissack to whom he was married in September, 1881. died April 15, 1905. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive, as follows: Linna, Now Mrs. O.C. Crow of Brownsville; William M. Myers, Jr., Joe Allen Myers and Luty, now Mrs. Lola M. Crow, the latter three of Sinton. All were present at the funeral. There are also seven grandchildren. In July, 1906, Mr. Myers was married to Miss Anna McKissack, a sister of his former wife. She died in November, 1910. On July 23, 1912, he was married to Miss Lillie Mayfield, who survives him and was present with his children at the memorial services. Mr. Myers made his home in Waco from 1881 to 1885. In Walnut Springs 1885 to 1913. In the Sinton community 1913 to 1926, and in Portland from 1926 until his death. He spent his entire active life in railroad service, beginning as a "water boy" carrying water for the shopmen in Hearne and later as a fireman on switch engines, finally through the line of training as engineer on freight trains to his place of trust as a passenger engineer, which position he held and honored for more than 35 years, a total service of 48 years spent as an employee of the H. & T. C., The Texas Central and M-K-T lines, "Uncle Billy" was not only a man of great integrity, dependability and honor, but a deeply religious man as well. He united with the Methodist Church in Walnut Springs more than 46 years ago and has been true to every tenet of his church to the day of translation. He organized a Sunday School class here composed of his fellow railroad men, and was president of the class for several years. He was Sunday School superintendent at Portland for a number of years and was always a faithful contributor to the financial program of the church. He was known far and wide as a "praying engineer" who knelt in his cab and prayed for divine guidance and protection before starting each passenger run. The story is told of his influence to even the humble porters, one of whom used to kneel on the outside of the cam and pray as "Uncle Billy" was praying inside. A remarkable fact is recorded showing that he had only two serious accidents during his long service of almost half a century. On the eight children, five sons and tree daughters, composing his father' s family, only one sister and a brother survive his, as follows: Mrs. Bessie M. Holt of Waco and Robert C. Myers of Fort Worth."
