The USGenWeb Project Archives are offline but the Texas files (minus the cemetery photos) are with our TXGenWeb county projects.
Welcome
Washington County is located in the southeast section of central Texas, almost exactly halfway between Austin and Houston. The county seat is Brenham, located in the south central part of the county on Hwy 290. Washington was created in 1835 as a municipality of Mexico, named for George Washington and organized as a county in 1837.It's the home of Washington-on-the-Brazos, the home of the government of the Republic of Texas, until October 1839. The community was first called Washington, then had to be distinguished from Washington-on-the-Potomac after the Civil War. Being situated on the Brazos River, it was a major community even after the county seat was moved to Brenham in February, 1844, to make it more centrally located. After the railroad bypassed it, it became less important for the shipment of goods.
Brenham and Burton are the only incorporated cities. Today, Brenham is known, in the South, as the home of Bluebell Ice Cream - the best ice cream, you'll ever eat.
(Bonham, Texas, is in Fannin County.)
