Welcome
Wheeler County was organized in 1876 in the Texas Panhandle, the first county in the area. Fourteen other counties were attached to it for judicial purposes until 1881. The county was named for Royall Tyler Wheeler, a Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court and the first head of Baylor Law School.Wheeler County is on the eastern edge of the Panhandle region. The county seat is also named Wheeler and is located just north of the center of the county at the intersection of Highways 83 and 152.
