Reagan County, TXGenWeb
genealogy & history

Welcome

Reagan County was created from Tom Green County in 1903 and Stiles was designated the county seat. Big Lake was voted as the new county seat in 1925. The county is located on the Edwards Plateau, east southeast of New Mexico. It's named after John Henninger Reagan, who was the postmaster general of the Confederate States, a U.S. senator, U.S. representative, and first chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas. Big Lake is located at the crossroad of Highway 137 and Highway 67 in the southeastern quadrant of the county. We don't know why it's called Big Lake, maybe the original folks wanted one, but it was most likely named after the oilfield that caused the town to boom.
